Trilokpuri is located in the eastern part of Delhi in India. It has 37 blocks out of which Block 19 has 500 households and a population of 3000.
Unlike other slum communities in the capital, this block has access to water, electricity, drainage facilities, and government schools and hospitals. The major problem in this area is with regard to gender discrimination and inequity in gender relations.
Magic Bus began working in this area since October 2010. At present, we have 30 children on our programme.
Jatin is in the ninth standard and has been attending the Magic Bus Sport for Development sessions since January 2011. For Jatin, the past four and a half years has been the best experience and we hear about it in his own words.
"I like coming for Magic Bus sessions not only because we get to play. The messages at the end of the sessions are particularly interesting. Not till I attended the sessions did I fully appreciate the importance of taking a bath regularly, going to school, or taking care of my diet. The best thing about knowing to do these is also being informed how it will help us", explains Jatin.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
Sessions are divided into 3 parts:
Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
