Sultanpuri

Nirankari Colony

About Delhi

Sultanpuri is a large slum community located in north-west Delhi. With around 5000 household and a population of 30000, this 35-year-old slum is home to migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar who moved to the national capital decades back in the hope of finding employment. However, lack of education and opportunities have made them frustrated over generations, leading to youth getting involved in criminal activities and petty thefts. The residents either own small businesses or work as daily wagers at construction sites. Lack of hygiene and sanitation is one of the pressing issues, considering the huge number of people crammed in a small space.

Since Magic Bus has started its intervention, the children and youth of the community have found a new hope. The weekly Sport for Development sessions along with the parents meeting ensured a constant interaction between the children and their parents, who otherwise were always caught up in their day-to-day fight for sustenance. Regular community tournaments keep the children and youth occupied, thereby preventing them from indulging in risky activities. With Magic Bus Livelihood Programme, many young people have got an opportunity to pursue a career of their choice by getting personal career counselling and skill based training.

Impact

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Faces of change

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
