About Delhi

Shakurpur is home to 3000 persons, mostly migrants from nearby states in search of work in the city. Residents are usually employed as daily wage labourers in nearby factories. About 33 per cent of the households in this community have a BPL card (Below Poverty Line).

Owing to its location in Delhi, Shakurpur is well-connected to both hospitals and schools.
Instead, some of the major issues of an urban slum cluster is visible here. Being surrounded by factories, makes this area prone to a high-level of pollution. In the absence of proper garbage disposal services, the area is vulnerable to diseases and infections affecting their overall wellbeing.

Magic Bus has been working on some of the issues facing this community since the last three years. At present, 250 children are a part of this transformational journey.

Programme Inputs

9-year-old Shivani studies in the fourth standard. Shivani belongs to a family of seven; she has four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. Her father owns a small shop in the locality and makes less than Rs. 6000 per month.

Initially it was difficult to get Shivani come for the sessions on time. She would turn up late and disrupt the sessions by picking up fights with her peers. However, with sustained encouragement and with her elder sister as an example in front of her, Shivani soon mended her ways. Her elder sister is a Community Youth Leader (CYL) with us, and it is with her encouragement that Shivani started seeing the faults in her behaviour.

Shivani has turned over a new leaf. Her behaviour has earned her a lot of friends.

Impact

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Faces of change

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
