About Delhi

Post Office is a 35 years old community located in the northern part of Delhi.
Most people living here are migrants from other states in the search of livelihood options. People belonging to different religions co-exist here.

Employment opportunities are few; most residents are in daily wage work which, in itself, is of an uncertain nature. Lack of employment opportunities have triggered a level of disillusionment among the youth, thereby, pushing them towards substance abuse. Gender discrimination in mobility is a common feature and one of our steepest challenges in getting a mixed gender session going.

Despite the challenges, since January 2013, Magic Bus' intervention in the community is bringing about a change in the lives of 50 children. The Community YOuth Leaders (CYLs) of Post Office have been helpful in bringing about a change in the community’s awareness towards children’s right to play, Health and Hygiene, and their need for education.

Programme Inputs

16-year-old Sagar hails from one of the poorest families of Post Office area. Both his parents had never gone to school and work as daily wage labourers for a salary of less than Rs. 5000 per month. A family of five lives on this. Sagar and his siblings go to school.

Initially, Sagar appeared to be quite shy and would not interact freely with others. With consistent encouragement and engagement in different activities during the sessions, Sagar emerged to be a person with ideas and a will to execute them with effort and hard work. Sagar is a Community YOuth Leader of Magic Bus in his area. He has a lot of trust riding on him and he appears confident of his role and work.

Impact

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Faces of change

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
