Ponnapuram in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh is home to a population of 4703 people. Inhabitants primarily belong to one particular social group, the Boyas, who are enlisted as a Backward Class group in Andhra Pradesh. Telugu is the spoken language. 55 percent of the households lie below the poverty line.
Agriculture forms the mainstay of livelihood options in this area. Residents also work in brick kilns and in MNERGS initiatives in their community during the offseason.
The distance to the nearest primary health centre and hospital is significantly long – 10km. There is a school in the vicinity. But in order to study further, young people have to travel a distance of 10km to reach the nearest college.
Magic Bus began working in this community in 2014. We have 60 children in our programme here. One of the problems facing our sessions here is the threat of harassment of our girl youth leader by local youth. We have planned sessions with various community stakeholders to address this problem.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
• Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
• Equal treatment of boys and girls
• Importance of education
• Respect for elders
Sessions are held twice every week on Wednesdays between 10.00am and 11.30am, and on Sundays between 4.00am and 5.30am.
Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:
• Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
• Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
• Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
