Durga Builders is a large community in South Delhi. It is located near Jaitpur and has 900 households. Half of this is an illegal settlement.
Residents are mostly self-employed shopkeepers, factory workers and daily-wage labourers.
Most houses are pukka and have attached toilets. A government-provisioned pipeline supplies the water in the area, and some homes have hand-pumps as well. However, the community does not have an effective method of garbage disposal, and therefore faces unsanitary and unhygienic conditions.
Girls in the community, especially those in families that are from Haryana, are generally not allowed to step outside their homes to play and are expected instead to help with domestic chores.
Durga Builders has been divided by Magic Bus into three parts for better delivery of our programme. Magic Bus started its sessions in the community in April 2012, and has a total of 239 children. Part 2 has 83 children out of which 35 are girls. The lack of a ground to conduct sessions in was the first problem faced and has been temporarily resolved. Magic Bus uses private property in the area, with the owner’s permission, to conduct its sessions.
Radhika is the Training and Monitoring Officer in charge of the community. She is assisted by Youth Mentors Sandeep Kaur and Milan, and 20 Community Youth Leaders, only three of whom are girls.
Recently, a football tournament and a drawing competition were held for children in the community.
Magic Bus volunteers and mentors have delivered key messages that include:
