Nirankari Basti

Nirankari Basti

About Delhi

Nirankari Basti is a small 30 year old slum community with around 300 households and a population of 1500. The community comprises of two primary schools, a police station, a dispensary and a play ground. Most of the residents are migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. While the men work as daily wage labourers at construction sites near the community, women work as domestic help to support the family. Lack of future opportunities has driven the youth to become addicted to drugs and other hazardous substances. Lack of a proper source of drinking water is another issue which the community struggles from.

However there has been a stark improvement since the Magic Bus programme has started there. Periodic events like football tournaments, drawing competitions along with continuous Sport for Development sessions and parents meeting has resulted in establishing a good rapport with the community members.

Programme Inputs

12-year-old Poonam is a Class 7 student who lives with her family in Narankari Basti. With 7 members, the household income is very little as her father works as a daily wager and her mother being a home maker.

Before joining Magic Bus, Poonam was famous for being a naughty child and that is how the Magic Bus Youth Mentor, Shiv Kumari was introduced to her by the community children when the Magic Bus intervention started in the community. Shiv at once decided to give her special attention and played a significant role in slowly transforming Poonam. She would talk to Poonam very patiently and gradually tried to engage her with other children for various group activities.

Simple gestures of affection seemed to do the trick as other Magic Bus children too gradually warmed up to her and Poonam got a platform to express herself and be understood. As Shiv said "The Magic Bus team, complete with the CYL and the children made Poonam feel a part of the family where she could thrive and openly talk about anything without being misunderstood. This gradually helped her become a confident girl from being a naughty one."

Impact

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Faces of change

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
