Nand Lal slum, Part-VI, Gopalpur is located in north Delhi and is approximately 25 years old.
Migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh are the primary settlers. Daily wage work is the most predominant source of income. Uncertain periods of employment and meagre wages mean that most of the households settled in this area are adversely impacted by poverty.
Magic Bus has been working in this community since 2011. In the last four years, we have given a platform to young leaders within the community resulting in 16 Community Youth Leaders (CYLs) being a part of our programme here. There are 501 children who are a part of our programme.
17-year-old Baby reads in the 12th standard and belongs to a family of six. She and her four siblings go to school. Her parents are daily wage workers with an earning less than Rs. 7000 per month.
Baby joined Magic Bus four years ago.Initially, she found it difficult to follow the instructions of the Community Youth Leader (CYL) during a game. Hardly did anyone at home talk to her or counsel her on issues like sanitation and right health practices. So, she found all these too new and hard to grasp. She soon started losing interest in the session.
The Community Youth Leader (CYL) spoke to her directly, asking her about her difficulties with the session. Baby shared that she could not follow many of the instructions in the session or the messages following it. So, the CYL started helping her understand how the session pans out, and how she can get the most out of the messages that were being shared at the end of it.
"It is very easy to just give the message of washing hands before you eat. But, in a community where water is a scarce source, how do you convince children to practice the same. It is this gap between messaging and translating it to practice that a CYL needs to bridge. Only then will you see a significant behaviour change", explains our Community Youth Leader (CYL) Suman.
Suman's unstinted efforts have brought about a great deal of change in Baby. For starters, she is much more engaged in the sessions and the Sit-Breathe-Think following it.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
Sessions are divided into 3 parts:
Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
