Majar Khyber Pass

Magic Bus Sujata Ghare Mentors Girl

About Delhi

Located in the northern part of Delhi, Majar is home to 2000 people.
Residents primarily belong to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe groups. Residents are mainly employed as sweepers. With a sheer lack of gainful employment options, poverty dogs the existence of the residents in this area.

Sanitation was identfified as one of the pressing issues of this community. The other crucial one being lack of awareness and interest in schooling and pursuing education. A large number of youth routinely drop out of education and indulge in gambling and substance abuse.

Magic Bus began working on such issues since 2013. There are 100 children in our programme trying to script a different future for themselves in surroundings that are outright challenging for them.

Impact

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Faces of change

Magic Bus' sessions are divided into 3 parts:

Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.

Photographs from Magic Bus areas of intervention are used for representation only.
