About Delhi

Kidwai Nagar is located in South Delhi, near Lajpat Nagar Station. It is an illegal settlement that is under threat of being broken down by the government in the near future.

There are around 250 households, most of which are kuccha houses. Most of the people work as domestic help in the government quarters nearby as drivers, maids, gardeners, etc. The houses have leaks when it rains because of the poor construction quality. None of the houses have toilets and residents have to rely on a single community toilet, which is dirty because of overuse.

The community is also faced with almost no system of waste disposal, which leads to the clogging of the streets. This problem is especially pronounced when it rains, as garbage clogs most of the drains.

Because of its illegal status, the locality is not provided with taps, hand pumps or pipes. Residents are forced to get their water supply from taps in government quarters nearby. The locality has electricity supply by there are no meters in place to record consumption, and power failures are rampant.
Magic Bus started operations in the community in July 2012. Currently, there are around 120 children attending sessions (only 30% of whom are girls). The low participation of girls in sessions is because parents encourage their daughters to stay home and help with domestic chores instead of going out to play. Although the participation from the community has increased, Magic Bus is seeing enrollment of only a fraction of the children in the community.
The Magic Bus Training and Monitoring Officer in charge of the community is Rajni. She is assisted by Youth Mentors Poonam and Kushni, and Community Youth Leaders Laxmi and Rupak.

Magic Bus had to discontinue operations in this locality because houses were to be demolished by the government. But this hasn’t happened so far, and Magic Bus Sport for Development sessions will resume soon.

Faces of change

Magic Bus sessions at Kidwai Nagar last for 2 hours each and are divided into three parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives
