With a population of 2500 people, Khyber Pas basti is located in north Delhi, India.
Majority of the residents practise Hinduism. Most of them do not have access to gainful avenues of employment.
Lack of awareness on education and its importance, and the non-adherence to sanitary and hygienic practices are some of the crucial problems facing this community.
Magic Bus has been working in this community since 2013. At present, we have 150 children as a part of the programme here.
Shiva (17) is among the 10 Community Youth Leaders (CYLs) in Khyber Pas basti.
Shiva's journey with Magic Bus began in 2012. "Back then, I didn't know if I could ever be a leader", he admits.
Today, after three years, Shiva has a different opinion about himself. " I know I have it in me to change situations within the community, to mentor children who are growing up in such difficult conditions", he says. For Shiva, it took several years of training and orientation to think this way.
Shiva adds," I have become much more focussed and disciplined. Some of the life skills I have learnt as a Youth Leader also helps me in planning my career ahead, with grit".
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
Sessions are divided into 3 parts:
