About Delhi

Khajuri Khas is a community located on the north-eastern part of Delhi in close proximity to a red light area. There are 1500-2000 houses in Khajuri Khas. Most of them are brick houses. The locality is marked by a complete absence of certain basic necessities, like water, toilets or roads.

Magic Bus faced a real challenge to find a play space during the initial days. This was overcome with community support over the next couple of months.

Programme Inputs

13-year-old Haseen was a naughty child. He would not get along with others. Rather, he would pick up a fight, snatch equipment and would make it difficult for others to play. He hardly made any friends.

In order to help Haseen overcome his behavioural issues, our Community Youth Leader (CYL) Rashid started encouraging him to participate actively during the sessions. He engaged with Haseen whenever the latter lost his temper over some trifle issues. He guided Haseen to see how his behaviour is damaging to the morale of his team and how he is slowly losing his friends because of this. But, Rashid couldn't have done this on his own without the support of the entire team. Each child stood by Haseen, resisting the urge to pick up a fight whenever Haseen was in one of his foul moods.

Such team work is key to the astounding behavioural transformations we see during the Magic Bus interventions.

Haseen isn't completely changes. But, he is aware that picking up fights and using abuses isn't the best way to handle situations. He tries consciously to work through such moments. He has earned a small group of friends who helps him work on his issues.

Impact

A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:

  • Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
  • Equal treatment of boys and girls
  • Importance of education
  • Respect for elders

Faces of change

Sessions are divided into 3 parts:

Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
