Chabolu is located in Nandyala cluster of Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh. It is home to 4538 persons. Inhabitants practise Islam and speak in a mixture of Telugu and Urdu. More than 90 percent of the households fall below the poverty line. The main source of livelihood is agriculture. Although a significant number own lands of their own, a small number of persons make a living through seasonal agricultural labour.
Both the Primary Health Centre and hospital is located at a distance of 5kms from the village. Children going to schools have to traverse a distance of 4kms to reach the nearest school. The nearest college is almost 7kms from this village.
Magic Bus began working in Chabolu from 2011. Some of the challenges in this community pertain to higher education for girls. Distance to the nearest college and deep rooted gender norms are the topmost reasons for discouraging higher education for girls in this community. Awareness about sanitation and hygiene was also found to be dismal. Magic Bus’ programme has been geared to address these critical challenges within the community.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
• Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
• Equal treatment of boys and girls
• Importance of education
• Respect for elders
Sessions are held once every week on Mondays between 4.00 and 5.00pm.
Magic Bus Sessions here are divided into three broad parts:
• Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
• Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
• Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
