About Ranga Reddy

Budlapur in Doma Mandal (Ranga Reddy District), within the state of Andhra Pradesh, is a village with 252 families; in each family there are 5 members on average. The community is primarily involved in agriculture. Rice and corn are the major crops grown. The entire family, including children, is involved in agricultural labour and related work. Despite a government verdict setting a minimum wage limit of INR 120 per day, women are paid less than men: they earn only INR 100 per day while the men earn INR 150. Based on availability of water, crops are cultivated twice a year. The average monthly income of a family is just INR 4000-5000.

Communities from Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs is a collective term, used by the Government of India, for castes which are educationally and socially disadvantaged, the government is enjoined to ensure their social and educational development) live together in Kamanpally. Some of the prominent ones include Maadiga and Maala (SC), Lambadi and Arukala (ST), Mudhiraj, Goud, Mangali and Chakili (BC), Reddy and Muslims (OC).

The sanitation conditions in the village are decent. Most people live in pucca houses and water is supplied by the Panchayat water tanks. There is no primary health centre in the village, although the ANM (Auxiliary Nurse and Midwife - village level health worker appointed under a central scheme by the Government of India) visits once a week. Budlapur has one primary government school and one private school.

Programme Inputs

Magic Bus operations started in December 2011 in Budlapur with 27 children and Community Youth Leader (CYL), Raju. To begin with, adults in the village were not very convinced about Magic Bus. But once the programme started, they eventually became very supportive of Magic Bus after plenty of persuasion by the youth leaders. The local leaders and the Panchayat have come forward and supported the programme too.

Raju whose child comes to the Magic Bus session, says, “My child has become very active after the Magic Bus intervention in our village. The children wait eagerly for these sessions and they are very helpful for the children both physically and mentally.”

The 19-year old local volunteer Community Youth Leader, recruited as part of a national strategy to use only volunteers to deliver our programme, says, “I feel very happy to give my time to children and I have gained lots of respect and recognition in the village.” He has received 120 hours of training on delivering the Magic Bus’ curriculum, which is part of the Sport for Development discourse in India.


Magic Bus interventions have led to a positive change in the Budlapur community. Some of these have been reflected in the form of:

  • The number of children dropping out from the school has decreased
  • A rising trend in punctuality at Magic Bus sessions as well as school
  • Girls and boys playing together, respectfully and with equal opportunities
  • Change in attitudes, which has allowed girls to open up and explore
  • A general improvement in attitudes and perceptions towards others in the community

Faces of change

A typical Magic Bus session lasts for 2 hours and is divided into 3 parts:

  • Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
  • Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
  • Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives
