Located in the north-western part of Delhi the Block H, Bakkarwala, is a slum cluster housing 470 households with 1,153 people. Lack of adequate drainage facilities exposes its residents to severe health hazards. The supply of water is drastically limited with the divisional board providing water tankers at an interval of two days.
Their struggle to access basic necessities like water is coupled with and equally tedious and unending process of trying to make ends meet. Most of the residents are employed in factories as daily wage labourers.
The nearest town, Nangloi, is located at a distance of 5-6kms. The nearest school and hospital is located there. Children from the community go to the only government school at Nangloi, which has classes till the tenth standard.
Magic Bus began its interventions in Block H, Bakkarwala, on September 2011.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
• Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
• Equal treatment of boys and girls
