Basti Colony is located near the TKD Government School in South Delhi. Basti Colony is an illegal community. There are 50 households in the locality. Most of the houses here are kuccha houses not equipped with toilets and residents have to resort to open defecation in the jungle nearby. There is no proper system for garbage disposal either. This causes sanitation issues in the locality and health and hygiene problems are major concerns in the community.
The government does not supply water to the community. Residents get their water from a government faucet nearby.
The community is largely comprised of rag pickers. Most children have very poor personal hygiene, and tobacco abuse and glue sniffing are rampant. Girls also are met with numerous restrictions, such as not being able to step outside of the house to play. Children also sometimes have to supplement their family’s income by resorting to begging.
Magic Bus started operations in Basti Colony in 2011. Currently, there are 30 children attending sessions, out of which only 8 are girls.
Mukesh Thakur is the Training and Monitoring Officer in charge of this community. He is assisted by Youth Mentor Kutpinder Pandey and Community Youth Leaders Muskan and Arif.
Health and hygiene are major concerns in this community. After Magic Bus started operations here, children have become more conscious of maintaining hygiene. Children have started showing up for sessions cleaner. They’re bathing regularly and washing their hands and faces.
Handball and football tournaments were recently held for the children in Basti Colony.
Magic Bus sessions at Basti Colony, TKD village, are held on Saturday from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. The session plan is divided into three parts:
