Baljeet Nagar is a slum area located in Zakhira, West Delhi, near the Prem Nagar/Patel Nagar Metro Station.
The population is around 30,000. Most men from this community work as labourers in rubber factories, helpers in garages, rag-pickers, richshaw pullers and street vendors. Women are engaged in small-scale enterprises and make handicrafts. Some women also work as domestic help, labourers and sweepers.
The area is very congested and has narrow lanes. Water supply in the area is provided by the government through tankers. Sanitation facilities remain a regular challenge. There are only two public toilets in the area and open defecation is prevalent. The locality does not have a proper drainage system and sanitation is a major concern for residents of Baljeet Nagar.
Magic Bus started operations in Baljeet Nagar in 2011. Around 200 children attend the sessions. However, the number of girls in the programme is less than 50. The Training and Monitoring Officer in charge of this community is Zakir Khan. He is assisted by Poonam, a 23-year-old Youth Mentor.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
• Importance of personal and environmental hygiene
• Equal treatment of boys and girls
• Importance of education
• Respect for elders
Magic Bus' sessions are held on Thursdays from 9am to 11am and on Sundays from 4pm to 6pm. Sessions are divided into 3 parts:
