Bakkarwala village is located in north Delhi and houses a population of 20,000 persons. The predominant languages spoken in this community are Hindi and Hariyanvi. 600 households in this community are below the poverty line.
Although well connected to health and education systems, some of the issues that need intervention centre around cleanliness, lack of awareness about healthy living and hygienic practices, and lack of employment opportunities.
Magic Bus has been working on some of these issues in Bakkarwala village since the last four years. At present, we are transforming the lives of 70 children in this area.
14-year-old Ritesh struggled to control his temper. "The slightest of provocation would goad him to fight. It became increasingly difficult for us to conduct a session without some disruption", narrates Youth Mentor, Shankar.
His mother was equally worried about Ritesh's temper issues. Ritesh had no friends even at school.
Gradually, through the messages shared at the end of a Magic Bus session, Ritesh started grasping the power of being respectful of others. Before long, Shankar could see that Ritesh was making honest efforts to overcome his anger issues.
A few of the areas of behaviour change addressed by Magic Bus volunteers and mentors include:
Sessions are divided into 3 parts:
Warm up: The development goal is introduced using interactive activities
Main activity: The development goal is reinforced using sports and activities
Review: A discussion is facilitated to draw parallels to real-life situations and sum up the learning objectives.
